Classic Fried Chicken Sandwich
4
Whole buttermilk
Chicken breading or a mixture of all-purpose flour and cornstarch (1/2 cup of each)
1 teaspoon
garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon
onion powder
1/4 teaspoon
black pepper
1/4 teaspoon
paprika
Dash of salt
Burger buns
Butter or Mayonnaise, for toasting buns
White cheddar cheese slices
Green leaf lettuce
Tomato slices
Thick cut bacon, cooked
Burger sauce (or substitute with your choice of condiment like whole grain mustard, BBQ sauce, ketchup, etc)
- Either use a commercially made chicken breading blend or make your own with equal parts of all-purpose flour and cornstarch.
- Add the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt and paprika to the flour blend and whisk to combine well.
- Make a breading station near your stove top pan that will fry the chicken by placing the buttermilk in a shallow dish and the dry seasoned flour mixture in a separate shallow dish.
- Heat your frying oil to about 350°F in a deep sided frying pan.
- Place chicken in the buttermilk and then into the seasoned flour mixture, making sure all sides are evenly coated; repeat procedure if you like a thicker breading.
- Place in the hot oil and fry for 4-5 minutes or until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F.
- Toast the burger buns with butter or mayonnaise.
- To assemble sandwich, place the chicken on the bottom piece of the bun, top with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and burger sauce, then finally the top bun.
